Remembering Dogs, Remembering People

August 26 was International Dog Day. Founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an animal rights advocate, the day celebrates the dogs who bring joy, companionship, and service into our lives. It’s also a reminder of the importance of adoption and the powerful bond between people and their pets.

I did my part. We recently adopted a labradoodle puppy, Bo Jackson. We hadn’t planned on getting another dog—Cash was supposed to be our last. But when we lost Bandit, Cash grew so sad and lonely that we knew something had to change.

Bo has been with us just two weeks, but already he’s lifted Cash’s spirits and filled our home with new energy. His arrival reminded me how essential companionship is—not just for dogs, but for people too.

Now imagine someone who doesn’t have that. They live alone. No family visits. Few, if any, friends dropping by. Their most consistent human interaction might be a trip to the grocery store. Now compound that loneliness with living unhoused.

If we set aside a day each year to celebrate dogs and the joy they bring, shouldn’t we also find ways to remember and care for the neighbors around us—housed or unhoused? Everyone deserves connection, love, and belonging.

At Community Forever Village, that’s exactly what we are working toward: a community where our unhoused neighbors find stability, dignity, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Pray for our neighbors who long for home and connection.
  • Donate to support the building of our village.
  • Volunteer your time and talents to move our mission forward.

Together, we can create a place where everyone belongs.
