Mardi Gras, traditionally celebrated on Fat Tuesday, marks the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. Its roots stretch back thousands of years to pagan celebrations of spring and fertility. When Christianity spread, religious leaders incorporated these traditions into the faith—perhaps finding it easier to adapt rather than abolish them.
Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, reflection, and prayer, begins today, March 5, 2025. It’s fascinating how we transition from a day of indulgence and celebration to a season of restraint and contemplation. Life is full of these contrasts—joy and sorrow, feasting and fasting, abundance and simplicity. Yet, even in the quieter moments, there is always something to celebrate: a perfect breeze, a breathtaking sunset, the way clouds form familiar shapes, a shared smile, or a warm handshake.
As we begin this Lenten season, how can we make it truly meaningful? Instead of just giving up chocolate or sweets, consider adding something positive. Acts of kindness, generosity, and service can deepen our experience of this season. Perhaps you could donate to a local charity, volunteer your time, or find small ways to uplift those around you.
