I know—mowing the yard doesn’t sound like a big deal. But for me, it felt huge.
I don’t usually mow. I never weed-eat or edge. But on this particular Saturday, it had to be done—and I was the only one available to do it. Not because I can’t. I just don’t like to. Still, it needed doing.
It should’ve been quick. Less than an hour, I thought. I dragged out the mower, gave the starter a pull—and nothing. Not a sound. Turns out, it was out of gas. I found the can and filled it up. But something nudged me to check the oil. Bone dry.
So off to Lawn Land I went, with pictures of my mower in hand. Robert helped me find the right oil (bless him), and I watched a YouTube video to learn how to pour it in. Back home, I got it going—and finally, the grass was mowed.
It sounds small, but it reminded me: hard things aren’t always hard once you ask for help. I learned something new, made a new friend, and now I know where to turn when I’m stuck.
At Community Forever Village, we’re doing something that feels big. Hard. We’re working to build a permanent, supportive community for our chronically homeless neighbors here in Denton. The kind of place where people can move off the streets and into a life filled with hope, belonging, and dignity.
And like my Saturday with the mower, we’re not doing it alone. We have great consultants. Supportive city staff. Volunteers who care deeply. And people—like you—who want to make Denton a better place for everyone.
This is a hard thing. But together, it becomes possible.
